At the beginning of 2002 we had found our little farm house and that was the time for me to have my male Australian Shepherd that was supposed to follow me all the time. In the meantime I had a good look at the Australian Shepherds and because of the fact that now we would have enough room and meadows (e.g. also for sheep) I decided that I wanted a dog from working lines – not easily to find in Europe, especially Germany! Finally, I traced Sandra Zilch in Aschaffenburg, a very good breeder for working Australian Shepherds.

At the end of June 2002 Zach moved in and Pepper adopted him right away. Dora did not like the puppy very much in the beginning, but this has changed during the course of the time. Astonishingly, right from the start Zach was all business no jokes. Of course, he loved to have fun with the other dogs, but, really, he never made one of the bad things puppies normally do.

Zach is absolutely different from Pepper. He is a careful dog with regard to unknown situations or people, this does not mean he is frightened, no; he is a “thinker”. Like Pepper, also Zach wants to please you – that makes training really easy and enjoyable. First, Zach is a little hesitant with unknown dogs (male or female), but after a short while he is doing fine. He will always try to avoid fights as long as possible, but is not hesitant to finish a fight when needed.

Naturally, Zach wants to accompany me all the time and since he is my dog I no longer need an alarm clock; he punctually wakes me up in the morning bringing me one of my socks (the reason I call him “Söckelein”). He is bored of any throwing games, but loves to play with his buddies, go for a walk, accompany us for biking and riding, obedience and other tasks and most of all – herding! When he is herding he is not hesitant at all! More than often he brought our neighbor’s cows back to their meadows. With him I am able to herd ducks and “Heidschnucken” (these are moorland sheep, a regional breed) and this requires a dog working at a proper distance and Aussies are known for the fact that they normally work closer than for example border collies. In case of necessity, he can be very emphatically.

We are member of the WEWASC and I can frankly say that herding is fun.

In September 2004 Zach and I attended the trials at the DWAS - and we finally were successful so that Zach is Started Trial Dog sheep now - I am very proud - he is much better than me - I still have lots and lots to learn!

Here at our trials in Wendenborstel at the beginning of August, Zach and I received our first qualifying score for the OTD sheep and a qualifying score for STD ducks. I am very proud - Zach is my very special dog! Beginning of September 2005 we were able to complete our Started Trial Dog ducks title, which is very nice.
